1. Stringing (Cobwebbing)

What it looks like: Thin strands of plastic connecting separate parts of your print, like a spider web.

Causes & fixes:

  • Increase retraction distance — try 0.5mm increments (direct drive: 1–2mm; Bowden: 4–6mm)
  • Lower nozzle temperature by 5°C — runny filament strings more easily
  • Increase travel speed so the nozzle spends less time over open air
  • Enable combing mode in your slicer to keep travel moves within the print perimeter
  • Check for wet filament — moisture causes excessive oozing

2. Warping & Lifting Corners

What it looks like: The corners or edges of your print lift off the bed during printing.

Causes & fixes:

  • Re-level your bed — an uneven first layer is the #1 cause of warping
  • Increase bed temperature (PLA: 60°C, PETG: 80°C, ABS/ASA: 100–110°C)
  • Add a brim (5–10mm) in your slicer to anchor the print to the bed
  • Use an enclosure for ABS and ASA to prevent drafts
  • Clean your bed with IPA before every print — oils from your hands reduce adhesion
  • Apply a thin layer of glue stick on glass beds for better grip

3. Under-Extrusion

What it looks like: Gaps, thin lines, or missing sections in your print walls and infill.

Causes & fixes:

  • Increase nozzle temperature by 5°C — filament may not be melting fast enough
  • Check for a partial clog — do a cold pull to clear debris from the nozzle
  • Reduce print speed — printing too fast starves the hot end
  • Inspect the extruder gear for wear or filament dust buildup
  • Increase flow rate / extrusion multiplier by 2–5% in your slicer
  • Dry your filament — moisture causes inconsistent flow

4. Over-Extrusion & Blobbing

What it looks like: Excess plastic, blobs, or a rough surface with too much material.

Causes & fixes:

  • Reduce flow rate / extrusion multiplier by 2–5%
  • Lower nozzle temperature slightly
  • Calibrate your extruder E-steps to ensure accurate filament feed
  • Check that your filament diameter setting matches your actual spool (1.75mm vs 2.85mm)

5. Layer Separation & Delamination

What it looks like: Layers splitting apart or peeling, especially on taller prints.

Causes & fixes:

  • Increase nozzle temperature — layers need enough heat to bond properly
  • Reduce print speed to give layers more time to fuse
  • For ABS/ASA: use an enclosure to prevent rapid cooling between layers
  • Reduce cooling fan speed — too much cooling prevents layer bonding
  • Increase layer height slightly to improve layer-to-layer contact

6. Clogged Nozzle

What it looks like: No filament coming out, or severely reduced flow that doesn't improve with temperature changes.

How to fix it:

  • Cold pull method: Heat to print temp, push filament through manually, cool to ~90°C (PLA) or ~140°C (PETG/ABS), then pull firmly — repeat until the pulled filament comes out clean
  • Atomic pull: Same as cold pull but done repeatedly for stubborn clogs
  • Use a 0.3mm acupuncture needle or nozzle cleaning needle to clear the tip
  • If the clog persists, replace the nozzle — brass nozzles are inexpensive and easy to swap
  • Avoid printing abrasive filaments (carbon fiber, glow-in-the-dark) through brass nozzles — use hardened steel instead

7. Poor First Layer Adhesion

What it looks like: The first layer doesn't stick, peels up, or looks uneven.

Causes & fixes:

  • Re-level your bed — the nozzle should be close enough to slightly squish the first layer
  • Clean the bed surface with IPA — fingerprints and dust are the most common culprits
  • Slow down first layer speed to 15–25 mm/s
  • Increase first layer height to 0.25–0.3mm for better squish
  • Make sure your bed temperature is fully stabilized before starting the print

8. Elephant's Foot (Flared First Layer)

What it looks like: The bottom of your print is wider than the rest, creating a flared base.

Causes & fixes:

  • Raise the nozzle slightly — it's too close to the bed and squishing too much
  • Lower bed temperature slightly
  • Enable elephant's foot compensation in your slicer (Cura, PrusaSlicer, Bambu Studio all have this)
